[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Wook] On the 1st, Miryang City in Gyeongnam held a 2023 New Year's Sunrise event for the Year of the Black Rabbit (Gyemyo-nyeon, 癸卯年) at the summit of Chuhwasan in Gyodong, hosted by the Gyodong Saemaeul Leaders' Association and the Gyodong Saemaeul Women's Association.
The event, prepared from dawn, included Jisinbalgi (ritual to drive away evil spirits), a prayer ceremony wishing for peace in the new year, a pungmul performance, and sharing of rice cake soup (tteokguk).
At the event, under the guidance of the head of Miryang Hyanggyo, Mayor Park Il-ho, Gyodong Chief Lee Jae-won, and the Saemaeul Association attended and offered a prayer ceremony wishing for the development of Miryang, while about 1,000 citizens together welcomed the hopeful first day of the Year of the Black Rabbit.
A citizen who participated in the event said, “I am grateful to the Gyodong Saemaeul groups for preparing warm tteokguk from early morning on New Year's Day. Being able to welcome the new year with the lively sounds of pungmul makes me feel I can have a vigorous year.”
Mayor Park said, “I thank the citizens who came to the event venue despite the cold weather. In the 2023 Year of the Black Rabbit, I hope it will be a happy year where all citizens take a strong leap forward and that all your wishes come true.”
