[Asia Economy Reporter Ji Yeon-jin] On the 1st, Kim Jin-pyo, Speaker of the National Assembly, announced, "We will begin full-scale preparations for constitutional amendment."
In his New Year's address that day, Speaker Kim stated, "I will do my best to transform politics of conflict and factionalism into politics of unity and cooperation." He also said, "We will expedite the revision of political-related laws, including the election law, to change the winner-takes-all political culture."
He said, "Upon taking office as Speaker of the National Assembly, I promised the people to open a National Assembly that creates new hope," adding, "It is a promise to build a National Assembly that leads social development and takes the lead in solving the challenges of the times." He continued, "At the end of last year, our National Assembly showed a truly shameful appearance," explaining, "Despite the urgent need to recover the economy and people's livelihoods, we wasted precious time failing to overcome minor differences."
He further stated that the people want the ruling and opposition parties and the government to unite their efforts to address the immediate difficulties in the economy and people's livelihoods, and that the people's mandate is to carry out 'capable politics' that leads social development by solving the challenges of the times.
He emphasized, "With the new year, we must renew our resolve," and said, "I have designated 2023 as the 'Year of Innovation' and will devote all my efforts to creating new hope in our society."
