Yeosu National Industrial Complex, Survey on Living Conditions of Workers

[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] Jeonnam Yeosu City and Yeosu Industrial Complex Joint Development Council (hereinafter, Gongbalhyeop) announced on the 29th the results of the 2021 industrial trends and various status surveys to establish an information system for Yeosu National Industrial Complex.


This survey conducted by Gongbalhyeop targeted 37 companies belonging to the Factory Managers' Council, and the data was built based on 35 companies excluding 2 companies that could not participate among the affiliates.


The proportion of companies headquartered in Yeosu among the Yeosu Industrial Complex resident companies was 37% of the total, companies headquartered in Seoul accounted for 51%, the number of partner companies was 4,331, and the annual number of external workers entering the site was analyzed to be 2,087,519.


GS Caltex refines 26.4 million barrels of crude oil annually, with 800,000 barrels refined daily, and the amount of petrochemical products produced by companies in the Yeosu Industrial Complex accounts for 4.15 million tons, which is 48% of the domestic total production of 8.75 million tons (based on ethylene production). The amount of fertilizer produced by Namhae Chemical was about 780,000 tons annually.


The local tax payment amount of Yeosu National Industrial Complex in 2021 was 123.8 billion KRW, an increase of 12.7 billion KRW compared to 2020, confirming the significant economic impact of Yeosu National Industrial Complex on the region.


The sales amount of Yeosu Industrial Complex in 2021 was 77.9555 trillion KRW, and the export amount was 39.5 billion USD, showing a slight increase compared to the 2020 sales amount of 53.5903 trillion KRW and export amount of 18.2 billion USD.


Also, the number of resident personnel was 13,430 men, 679 women, totaling 14,109, among which 700 were newly hired. Regarding the regional distribution of regular employees of the affiliates, 8,340 resided in Yeosu City, 3,355 in Suncheon, 196 in Gwangyang, 567 in other Jeonnam areas outside Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang, and 1,651 in regions outside Jeonnam.


Notably, it was confirmed that the number of residents in the Suncheon area increased by 1,251 compared to 2020.


In particular, the results of the population increase plan survey, which was to be conducted to analyze in detail the causes of population outflow to neighboring areas, were also announced.


Secretary-General Kim Shin said, “Among the problems with the residential environment in Yeosu City perceived by respondents in this survey, the three noteworthy issues were: first, expensive housing prices; second, inconvenient commuting due to traffic congestion and road conditions; and third, lack of shopping and cultural infrastructure.”


He added that there were many opinions regarding the inconvenience caused by the aging of Yeosu Industrial Complex company housing and the avoidance of company housing by the younger generation.
