[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] YLAB, a content universe specialized production company, is partnering with Daewon C.I., a comic publishing company, to release a collector's edition volume of the webtoon 'Island.'
The first part of the YLAB webtoon 'Island' volume will be published on the 29th, and the second part will be released in January next year. Each part consists of 4 volumes and is produced as a box package collector's edition. When the first and second parts are placed side by side, the protagonist 'Ban's weapon 'Geumgangjeo' is also completed. A physical card with inserted illustrations is provided as a supplement.
The webtoon 'Island' is a fantasy action story about 'Ban,' 'Won Miho,' and 'Yohan,' who protect people from numerous yokai on Jeju Island. It depicts the story of the cold-blooded exorcist 'Ban,' shrouded in mystery, the heir of a large conglomerate 'Won Miho,' and the exorcist priest 'Yohan' as they confront mysterious yokai. It is famous as a unique genre webtoon combining Korean traditional folklore and religion.
The first part of the comic Island was first serialized as a black-and-white comic in 1997, and the following year it was published as a volume and exported worldwide. In 2002, it also won the Korea Cultural Content Export Award.
As a webtoon, the first part was restructured and began serialization on Naver Webtoon in 2016. The second part was also released as a color webtoon in the same year.
In 2021, the mobile game 'IslandM,' utilizing the content and concept of Island, was released. Then, on the 30th, the drama 'Island,' starring actors Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, Cha Eun-woo, and Sung Joon, which is regarded as the biggest anticipated work of the year-end, will be released through TVING and Amazon Prime Video.
A YLAB official said, "Island is a powerful value chain IP that started as a comic and continued through webtoon, game, drama, and volumes, proving great competitiveness in the content market," adding, "Following its publication in Japan, the collector's edition volume, which increases its collectible value, will be published domestically as well, so we expect continued interest from Island fans."
The webtoon 'Island' can be enjoyed on the Naver Webtoon Recommended Completed tab. From the 30th to January 3rd next year, a 5-day event will be held where free tickets for 3 episodes of 'Island Part 2' will be given daily.
