First Selected as a Super Metropolitan Area, Hub for New Industry Revitalization

Gumi City (Mayor Kim Jang-ho) held the opening ceremony of the 'Northeast Region Metaverse Hub,' a regional integrated support base for metaverse companies aimed at creating a sustainable metaverse ecosystem, utilizing the metaverse, and expanding its base, at 2 p.m. on the 28th.
About 80 officials attended the opening ceremony, including Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho, Lee Dal-hee, Deputy Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do for Economic Affairs, National Assembly members Kim Young-sik and Koo Ja-geun, Lee Byung-jin, Director of Digital Content Division at the Ministry of Science and ICT, An Joo-chan, Chairman of Gumi City Council, Kwak Ho-sang, President of Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Woo Byung-gu, Director of Gumi Electronics and Information Technology Institute, and representatives from metaverse-related companies.
The Northeast Region Metaverse Hub construction and operation project, supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gangwon-do, Gumi City, Gangneung City, and Daegu City, and hosted by the Gumi Electronics and Information Technology Institute, was selected in the 2022 public contest and is scheduled to receive a total project cost of 20 billion KRW (6 billion KRW national funds, 14 billion KRW local funds) by 2024.
Centered in Gumi City, Gyeongbuk, this project aims to establish a central regional metaverse center that performs tasks such as ▲supporting demonstrations based on metaverse 5G networks ▲discovering and operating region-specific content and establishing a metaverse nomad work environment ▲training metaverse talent within the region.
Through this project, metaverse ecosystem creation projects promoted by Gyeongbuk Province and Gumi City, such as the 5G-based metaverse industrial complex demonstration project, the Hallyu Metaverse Hall construction project, and the Metaverse Global Innovation Special Zone project, will gain momentum.
Mayor Kim Jang-ho of Gumi said, "With the addition of the 'Northeast Region Metaverse Hub' to the metaverse infrastructure already established in Gumi Kumoh Techno Valley, such as the XR Device Development Center and 5G Testbed, it has become possible to centralize metaverse projects. Through this, we will secure a leading position in metaverse-related businesses and establish Gumi as a representative metaverse city (Meta-City) attracting excellent talent."
