Cargo Ship with Engine Failure While Entering Hwasun Port, Jeju Rescued

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] A cargo ship drifting toward the breakwater at Hwasun Port in Seogwipo City, Jeju, was rescued by the Seogwipo Coast Guard.

According to the Seogwipo Coast Guard on the 28th, a report was received that the cargo ship A (5126t, Panama-registered, 14 crew members), which was entering Hwasun Port around 2:40 PM the previous day, was drifting toward the breakwater due to engine failure during docking attempts.

Upon receiving the report, the Seogwipo Coast Guard dispatched five patrol vessels and a rescue team, and attempted towing together with the civilian fishing boat B (2.76t, coastal composite, Hwasun-registered).

The ship A was pushed to a point 3 to 4 meters in front of the breakwater. The towing line connected to the bow was fixed to the opposite pier, and the towing line at the stern was used with the patrol vessel to attempt towing. Finally, at around 6:25 PM, the ship was moored at Pier 2 of Hwasun Port.

There were 14 crew members (Chinese nationals) on board ship A, carrying 146 tons of cargo (generator parts) and approximately 47 tons of fuel.

It was confirmed that no human or material damage or oil spills occurred during the rescue operation.

The Seogwipo Coast Guard is investigating additional damage and the exact cause of the accident together with the shipping company.
