[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] Daegu Jung-gu Office ranked first among 229 basic local governments nationwide in the ‘2022 Disabled Welfare Project Evaluation’ held on the 26th and received the highest award, the Grand Prize.

The Disabled Welfare Project Evaluation was introduced in 2020 to establish an efficient foundation for promoting disabled welfare projects and to improve the level of local disabled welfare. Every year, it evaluates a total of 37 indicators across four areas including disabled independence support projects, welfare services, and delivery systems, awarding outstanding local governments.

Daegu Jung-gu continuously promotes customized disabled welfare projects unique to Jung-gu by communicating with disabled welfare facilities, disabled organizations, and local residents. In particular, to expand the 24-hour public care system for the disabled, it has proactively relaxed the selection criteria for beneficiaries of the severe disabled activity assistance project, and supports budgets for projects such as operating an arts performance team for people with developmental disabilities and dispatching masseurs for the visually impaired.

It has actively promoted various new disabled welfare projects such as the Smile Again project, which provides diapers and medical supplies to bedridden severely disabled persons, and the electric wheelchair kit rental project to facilitate long-distance travel for electric wheelchair users.

Ryu Gyu-ha, Mayor of Daegu Jung-gu, said, “Building on this Grand Prize award, in 2023 we will establish the 1st Basic Plan for Disabled Welfare in Jung-gu to promote substantial disabled welfare projects through continuous public-private cooperation and create a customized welfare Jung-gu where not only the disabled but all residents can be happy by building disabled welfare infrastructure, a pledge of the 8th local government administration.”

The second place, the Excellence Award, was awarded to Jeju City, Seoul Gangdong-gu, Daejeon Daedeok-gu, and Gwangju Nam-gu, among others.
