Director Bong Joon-ho's film "Parasite" has been included in the "Top 100 Movies" selected by the film industry publication Variety.
On the 21st (local time), Variety announced its selection of the top 100 greatest films of all time. "Parasite" was the only Korean film to be included, ranking 82nd.
The publication described "Parasite" as a thriller with sharp intent and universal appeal, and a work that marked a tipping point in the history of the American Academy Awards (Oscars).
"Parasite" depicts the story of two families whose encounter begins when Ki-woo, the eldest son of the unemployed Ki-taek family, steps into the home of Mr. Park for a high-priced tutoring interview, leading to an uncontrollable series of events. The film stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, and Choi Woo-shik. At the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, it became the first Korean film to win four major awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. It also won the Palme d'Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival in 2019.
Variety ranked Alfred Hitchcock's suspense thriller "Psycho" (1960) as the greatest film of all time. Victor Fleming's "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) took second place, and Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" (1972) came in third. Orson Welles' masterpiece "Citizen Kane" (1941) was fourth, and Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" (1994) ranked fifth.
