[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] Lee Han-seong, co-CEO of Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management (Hwacheon Daeyu), who cooperated in concealing the assets of Kim Man-bae, the major shareholder of Hwacheon Daeyu, has filed a detention review petition with the court. A detention review is a procedure in which a detained suspect challenges the legality of the detention and requests the court to reconsider. If the court accepts the detention review petition, the prosecution must release the suspect.
According to the legal community on the 21st, Lee filed the detention review petition at the Seoul Central District Court the day before. The hearing will be held on the 22nd at 2:10 p.m. before the Criminal Appeal Division 5-1 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judges Choi Byung-ryul, Won Jeong-sook, Jeong Deok-su).
Lee is accused of hiding approximately 26 billion KRW by withdrawing profits from the Daejang-dong project in checks and storing them secretly, or by making false accounting entries to purchase real estate under borrowed names, from October last year to July this year under the instructions of Kim, along with Hwacheon Daeyu director Choi Woo-hyang (former vice chairman of Ssangbangwool Group).
Lee was a secretary to Lee Hwa-young, former Gyeonggi Province Peace Deputy Governor and close aide to Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, when Lee Hwa-young was a member of the National Assembly. After joining Hwacheon Daeyu at the request of Kim, a fellow alumnus of Sungkyunkwan University, Lee is known to have managed Kim’s bank accounts and seals, and handled fund withdrawals according to his instructions.
