[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Seoyul] Samyuk University will select a total of 379 students in the 2023 academic year regular admissions. This accounts for 31.1% of the total recruitment quota, maintaining the government-recommended '30% regular admissions rule' for the second consecutive year.
Samyuk University will conduct regular admissions from December 29 to January 2. All departments except for arts and physical education will select new students based on 100% CSAT scores, and cross-application is possible regardless of the division between humanities and sciences.
CSAT scores are reflected across four areas for general departments (excluding Pharmacy and arts and physical education): Korean, Mathematics, English, and Inquiry (average of 2 subjects). The top four scores are weighted at 40%, 30%, 20%, and 10%, respectively. For applicants to natural science departments, those who took Calculus or Geometry in Mathematics receive an additional 5% added to their total score.
English scores are applied differentially according to Samyuk University's conversion table, ranging from 100 points for grade 1 to 0 points for grade 9 (grade 8 is 40 points). Inquiry subjects include Social Inquiry, Science Inquiry, and Vocational Inquiry. One subject can be substituted with Korean History, but no additional points are awarded.
The Pharmacy department will select 14 students (12 general admissions, 2 rural area admissions) in this regular admission cycle, the same as last year. The weights are 25% Korean, 30% Mathematics, 25% English, and 20% Inquiry (average of 2 subjects). Applicants who took Social Inquiry or Probability and Statistics, which are mainly chosen by humanities students, are also eligible to apply.
However, if Mathematics Calculus or Geometry is chosen, 5% of the acquired score is added, and if Science Inquiry is chosen, an additional 3% is added. Vocational Inquiry is not recognized, and substitution with Korean History is not allowed. The additional points for Korean History total score have also been abolished.
Departments in arts and physical education such as Physical Education, Art and Design, and Music also reflect practical skills scores. The Physical Education department selects students by combining 60% CSAT and 40% practical skills, while the Art and Design and Music departments combine 51% CSAT and 49% practical skills.
For arts and physical education departments, CSAT scores reflect the top two areas among Korean, Mathematics, English, and Inquiry at 50% each. However, the Physical Education department uses the average of 2 Inquiry subjects, while the Art and Design and Music departments use only 1 subject. All three departments recognize Vocational Inquiry. One subject can be substituted with Korean History, but no additional points are awarded.
The Physical Education department reflects CSAT percentiles, but the Art and Design and Music departments apply their own converted scores based on grades. The score difference between grades 1 to 7 in the Art and Design and Music departments is only 2 to 4 points, so the practical exam is expected to be the decisive factor in admissions.
