[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Juhyung] The Argentina national team, which won the championship trophy for the first time in 36 years since the 1986 Mexico World Cup, is set to receive prize money exceeding 50 billion KRW. The total prize money for participating countries in this World Cup has also increased compared to the previous tournament (2018 Russia).
The World Cup final between Argentina and France, held at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar at midnight on the 19th, ended with Argentina's victory after a fierce battle. The two teams were tied 2-2 during the regular 90 minutes of the first and second halves, and 3-3 after extra time, before Argentina finally won 4-2 in the penalty shootout to determine the winner.
The Argentina team that won the World Cup will receive a total prize of 42 million USD (approximately 55 billion KRW). This is about 12 million USD (approximately 15.7 billion KRW) higher than the 30 million USD (approximately 39.3 billion KRW) awarded to France, who finished second. The first-place prize money for this World Cup was also set higher than the prize money of 38 million USD from the previous 2018 World Cup.
The reason for the large prize money for the winning team is that the total prize money has increased significantly compared to the previous World Cup. The total prize money given to teams participating in the 2018 Russia World Cup was 400 million USD (approximately 524 billion KRW), but this time it increased by 10% to 440 million USD (approximately 576.4 billion KRW).
Moreover, the F?d?ration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) also provides compensation to clubs from various countries that sent players to participate in the World Cup matches. The total club compensation for this World Cup is 209 million USD (approximately 273.7 billion KRW), and clubs will receive compensation calculated by multiplying 10,000 USD by the number of days each player participated in the tournament.
