[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] Around 4:55 PM on the 15th, multiple workers were poisoned by carbon monoxide while curing concrete in the basement of a newly constructed apartment site in Unjeong New Town, Dongpae-dong, Paju-si, Gyeonggi Province.

The fire authorities transported nine injured individuals to the hospital, including three with serious injuries and six with minor injuries. Two of the seriously injured who were unconscious have since recovered and are reported to be out of life-threatening danger.

Initially, it was reported that there were a total of 21 injured, including four seriously injured and 17 with minor injuries, but those with simple inhalation were excluded from the count. However, additional workers complaining of pain are being identified, so the number of injured may increase.

The accident is presumed to have occurred while burning a charcoal stove during the concrete curing process. The relevant authorities mobilized 38 personnel including rescue teams and 17 pieces of equipment, and issued an emergency response level 1, which was lifted around 6:15 PM that day.

During winter construction sites, when curing concrete or similar materials for heat retention, burning stoves in enclosed environments can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas produced when fuels such as lignite or charcoal undergo incomplete combustion.
