[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] Yeom Dong-ryeol, a former member of the Future United Party (predecessor of the People Power Party), who was sentenced to one year in prison for abusing his position as a member of the National Assembly to influence the hiring of acquaintances at Kangwon Land, will be released on parole.
According to the legal community, the Ministry of Justice held a parole review committee meeting on the 14th and determined that former lawmaker Yeom is eligible for parole. He is scheduled to be released at 10 a.m. on the 23rd.
Yeom, whose constituency was Jeongseon County in Gangwon Province where Kangwon Land is located, was indicted on charges of pressuring Kangwon Land’s HR team leader and others from November 2012 to April of the following year to unlawfully hire dozens of acquaintances or supporters’ children during the first and second trainee selection processes. He was sentenced to one year in prison in both the first and second trials.
However, the court did not order his immediate detention, considering the spread of COVID-19 infections and the lack of flight risk.
Subsequently, in March of this year, the Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s ruling, stating, “There is no error affecting the judgment such as violating the rules of logic and experience, exceeding the limits of free evaluation of evidence, or misunderstanding the law regarding the use of force in obstruction of business, the object of the act, the third-party nature of the business, and co-conspirator liability.”
