The Largest Interactive Sculpture in Korea, Winner of the '2022 Korea Spatial Culture Awards Presidential Prize'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City Spacewalk has been selected as one of the ‘2023?2024 Korea Tourism 100’ representing South Korea.
Now in its 6th edition, the ‘Korea Tourism 100’ is held every two years by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization to promote major domestic tourist destinations and revitalize tourism. It selects 100 representative tourist spots that both domestic and foreign visitors to Korea should definitely visit.
The ‘2023?2024 Korea Tourism 100’ was selected through a strict evaluation process including a first round of document review, a second round of on-site inspection, and a third final selection committee, based on ▲ the Korea Tourism 100 selected in 2021?2022 ▲ local government recommended tourist sites ▲ and 235 candidate sites discovered through big data analysis.
Pohang Spacewalk is the largest experiential sculpture in Korea, designed so visitors can walk along a 333-meter-long steel structure track and enjoy panoramic views of surrounding scenery such as Hwanho Park, Pohang Steelworks, Yeongil Bay, and Yeongildae Beach at a glance.
Eleven months after its opening, it surpassed 1 million visitors in October, won the Presidential Award at the 2022 Korea Spatial Culture Awards, and served as the filming location for the 2022 Korea Tourism global advertisement. It has become an undisputed landmark of Pohang, attracting visitors from all over the country.
This selection of Pohang Spacewalk marks the third time following the consecutive selections of ‘Pohang Canal & Jukdo Market’ in 2017?2018 and ‘Pohang Canal’ in 2019?2020.
Park Sang-jin, head of the Tourism Industry Division, said, “We are very pleased that Pohang Spacewalk has been recognized as a representative tourist destination of South Korea,” and added, “We will do our best to develop various tourism contents and actively promote marketing to leap forward as a ‘Global Tourism City Pohang.’”
