[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Gwangju Nambu Fire Station emphasized the importance of ‘fire extinguishers and other firefighting facilities’ for initial suppression in the event of a fire, on the 14th.
According to the Nambu Fire Station, a fire broke out at the entrance of an apartment in Nam-gu last October, raising concerns about casualties as the only evacuation route was blocked, in addition to property damage.
However, the fire was extinguished using a fire extinguisher installed in the apartment at the time, and fortunately, there were no casualties, with only minor property damage. It was the power of the firefighting facilities installed on site.
Also, a fire that occurred in an apartment located in Haengam-dong in July was initially extinguished as the sprinkler operated, protecting the precious lives of three residents. Automatic fire extinguishing systems, including sprinklers, play a crucial role in preventing the spread of fire.
Accordingly, from January 2018 to December this year, out of a total of 476 fires that occurred in Nam-gu, firefighting facilities including sprinklers operated to prevent the spread of fire in 157 cases, and the estimated amount of property damage reduction during this period is 130 billion KRW.
The amount of property damage reduction was calculated by estimating the damage amount if the fire extinguishing facilities had not operated and the fire had completely destroyed the facility, then subtracting the actual property damage incurred.
Lee Jang-shin, head of the 119 Disaster Response Team, said, “It is most important to respond so that the fire does not spread within the golden time through initial fire suppression,” and urged, “Firefighting facilities such as fire extinguishers and sprinklers must be thoroughly managed to safely respond to fires.”
