[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] President Yoon Suk-yeol stated on the 13th regarding labor reform, "We will discuss reform plans to establish a fair and future-oriented labor-management culture."

In his opening remarks at the Cabinet meeting held at the Yongsan Presidential Office that morning, President Yoon said, "Improving the dual structure of the labor market, which is directly linked to the competitiveness of our industry and the jobs of future generations, is a task that can no longer be postponed."

Referring to the recommendations of the government's expert group on labor market reform, the 'Future Labor Market Research Committee,' President Yoon said, "Based on the recommendations, we will promptly organize the government's position and steadfastly promote reforms to protect the vulnerable workers in our society."

The 'Labor Reform Plan' recommended by the Future Labor Market Research Committee the day before includes labor reform tasks such as flexibilization of the basic 40-hour and maximum 12-hour extension '52-hour workweek system' on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis, transition to a job performance-based pay system, and prevention of abuse of comprehensive wage systems.

Regarding the collective transport refusal by the Cargo Solidarity that ended on the 9th, he expressed regret, saying, "It is unfortunate that this strike ended only after two work commencement orders were issued, leaving deep wounds on our economy," and added, "Those responsible for illegal acts during the strike period must be held accountable to the end. Police and other law enforcement agencies must respond firmly to illegality and violence with a strong sense of responsibility."

President Yoon, who specifically mentioned illegal acts in industrial sites such as violence, extortion, employment obstruction, and construction interference, emphasized, "If the state does not swiftly and strictly enforce the law and neglects these issues, the public, workers, and business owners will be too fearful and anxious to do anything," and stressed, "There will be no compromise with illegality during my term."

He also expressed deep gratitude once again to the public who endured pain and inconvenience during the strike period, trusting and being patient with the government, and promised, "The government will mobilize all available resources to fully restore the economic damage caused by the strike."

He reiterated his position to reform health insurance to provide stronger coverage for vulnerable groups and patients with severe diseases who are in medical blind spots. President Yoon said, "Populist policies that waste taxpayers' money undermine the foundation of the health insurance system and ultimately force great sacrifices on the people," and emphasized, "Therefore, health insurance reform is not a choice but a necessity."
