Reduction and Adjustment of the 'Gwangju Joseon Baekja YojI' Area

Relieving Local Residents' Inconvenience... Archaeological Site Distribution Survey at 'Buan Yucheon-ri Site'

Reduction and Adjustment of the 'Gwangju Joseon Baekja YojI' Area

The Cultural Heritage Administration, Gwangju City in Gyeonggi Province, and the Korea Ceramic Foundation will hold an on-site meeting on the 'Regulatory Innovation Cases in the Cultural Heritage Sector' at the Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum on the 12th. They will share the achievements of reducing and adjusting the boundaries of the 'Gwangju Joseon White Porcelain Site' area and explore ways to apply this to other historic sites. Commendations will also be awarded to Gwangju city officials and Korea Ceramic Foundation staff who helped reduce inconvenience to residents.

The Gwangju Joseon White Porcelain Site was a central area for making ceramics from the early to late Joseon Dynasty. It was designated as a historic site in November 1985. At that time, the designated area covered seventy-eight locations totaling 407,660㎡ across Jungbu-myeon, Gwangju-eup, Chowol-myeon, Silchon-myeon, and Namjong-myeon in Gwangju City. The extensive designation of the historical and cultural environment preservation area restricted various development activities, causing frequent inconvenience to local residents.

Since 2018, the Cultural Heritage Administration has conducted trial excavations and excavations focusing on the cultural heritage area and its surroundings. Based on this, the appropriateness of the cultural heritage area was reviewed, resulting in a reduction and adjustment to sixty-six locations totaling 386,352㎡. An official stated, "We plan to complete the appropriateness review by 2025 and rationally adjust the scope of regulations by redefining the boundaries of the cultural heritage area and the historical and cultural environment preservation area." They added, "Next year, we will continue to reduce residents' inconvenience by conducting site distribution surveys at the 'Buan Yucheon-ri Site' and 'Buan Jinseo-ri Site' and readjusting the permissible standards."
