[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seohee] Winter, the season that wraps up the golf season, has arrived. Golfers organize their golf equipment that has served its purpose throughout the year and look forward to next spring. However, if equipment is stored carelessly for a long time, you might face disappointment next spring. Most golf equipment is sensitive to temperature and humidity, and if not stored properly, their shape and performance can be easily damaged. Here are the proper golf equipment care tips for the 'golf off-season' winter period.

Clean clubs thoroughly and dry completely... Store in a well-ventilated place

If you do not plan to use your clubs for an extended period, you should first clean the entire club, including the head, with a dry towel.

Since scrubbing the head with a scouring pad or brush can cause scratches, wipe it with a soft cloth or flannel. If there is foreign matter on it, gently rub it with a damp towel, but be sure to dry it completely before storing. Especially forged iron heads are mostly made of mild steel, which can rust if exposed to moisture for a long time. Therefore, it is essential to dry off all moisture completely. Oiling is also not recommended.

If you want to remove fine scratches on the club, you can apply automotive fine scratch remover compound or billiard ball cleaning liquid to a cloth and wipe the surface. Using this method can make the club feel much newer than just wiping with water.

Foreign substances stuck in the face grooves can be easily removed by soaking in warm water for about 5 minutes and then gently brushing with a toothbrush. Afterward, rinse with clean water and wipe off moisture completely with a dry towel.

After cleaning, cover the clubs with head covers that allow good ventilation and store them in the golf bag. It is also acceptable to remove the head covers and store the clubs in a well-ventilated place. If you are concerned about moisture, it is advisable to place moisture absorbers or insert dry newspapers between the clubs.

Proper moisture is essential when storing grips... Golf gloves should be stored in their original shape

Grips age very slowly, so most golfers do not notice damage. Therefore, if you do not pay special attention, you might have to replace the grips before realizing it.

The most important thing when storing grips is maintaining proper moisture. If left alone, the grip surface hardens, so wipe the surface with a damp towel once every 1 to 2 weeks.

If sweat and dirt are on the grip, gently wipe the surface with a cloth dampened with water or a neutral detergent. Then dry completely in the shade before putting them back in the bag for storage.

It is better to store golf gloves by keeping the fingers extended in their original shape rather than rolling them up and putting them in the bag. Shaping them this way allows the natural oils inside the leather to come to the surface, keeping the gloves soft again. Purchasing a glove holder shaped like a hand and fitting the gloves to the holder is also a good way to store gloves in their original form.

Especially, sheep leather golf gloves are vulnerable to hot and humid environments. If not managed properly, the leather can deteriorate due to oils contained in sweat. If gloves get wet with sweat after a round, wipe off the sweat with a dry towel and dry them completely in the shade before storing. If possible, it is good to frequently take off the gloves during the round to air-dry the sweat.

Equipment varies depending on temperature and humidity... Golf balls must be stored at room temperature

Golf balls are equipment whose performance varies greatly depending on temperature and humidity.

The main rule for storing golf balls is to keep them at 'room temperature.' Golf balls are designed to perform best at room temperature. Leaving golf balls in the car trunk during cold winter makes not only the surface but also the core hard, affecting the distance.

If you go out for a round even in winter, it is good to carry several golf balls in your jacket or pockets to maintain their temperature. Putting golf balls together with a heat pack in the storage box or pouch inside the cart is also a good method.
