This Citizens Academy is an opportunity to explore how our modern era has been visualized as images and how it has spread and internalized among the public at this point where the past does not end as the past but flows into the present, and to learn about the beginning of modern Korean art.

Hyunjung Ahn, a curator at Sungkyunkwan University Museum, will examine the perspectives of the Japanese colonial period and modern visual media centered on the Joseon Art Exhibition through the lecture ‘The Gaze of Modernity, Joseon Art Exhibition’.

Those who wish to attend should write the applicant’s name and apply by email (email subject: Citizens Academy 5th Session Applicant Name·Contact·Number of Applicants).

Up to two companions can apply, and children in grades 1 to 3 of elementary school can attend accompanied by a parent, while preschool children are not allowed to enter.

An official from the Ulsan Museum of Art said, “We hope this lecture will be a meaningful time to understand the exhibitions of the Governor-General-led expos and museums symbolizing the shift in visual structure, as well as the Joseon Art Exhibition that solidified the colonial gaze.”
