[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The top scorer nationwide in the 2023 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) was Kwon Ha-eun, a third-year student at Ulsan Hyundai Cheongun High School.
Besides Kwon Ha-eun, there were two other students nationwide who achieved a perfect score on the CSAT this year, but based on the total sum of standard scores, which varies depending on elective subjects, Kwon Ha-eun ranked first nationwide.
Kwon Ha-eun chose Language and Media for Korean, Calculus for Mathematics, and Chemistry I and Life Science II for the Science Inquiry section. The standard scores she received in each area were 134 in Korean, 145 in Mathematics, 75 in Chemistry I, and 71 in Life Science II, totaling 425 points.
Chemistry I, which Ha-eun took, was reportedly the most difficult subject in the entire Science Inquiry section, achieving the highest standard score.
Gu Sang-woo, the head teacher of the third year at Hyundai Cheongun High School, said, “Despite social distancing measures that restricted going out, Kwon Ha-eun studied at school and the dormitory during the vacation period.” Kwon’s home is in Busan, and she attended the boarding high school in Ulsan as a transfer student.
He also praised her actual achievement, saying, “She had already scored perfect raw scores three times in the nationwide joint academic assessment during her first and second years, so we expected good results in the CSAT as well.”
One teacher introduced, “What supported the student’s achievement above all was the strength gained from competing and leading each other with friends. In fact, a friend who consistently competed with Kwon Ha-eun for first and second place studied together and scored 423 points based on the standard score, missing only one math question in this CSAT.”
Shin Kyung-gyo, Kwon Ha-eun’s homeroom teacher, praised her leadership, saying, “As the class president and a mentor to many friends, I want to commend Ha-eun’s devoted attitude.”
Kwon Ha-eun aims to enter the medical field. She applied to the medical schools of Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Sungkyunkwan University, Ulsan University, and Korea University, passed the first stage at all, and is currently awaiting final acceptance.
