Cargo Solidarity General Vote Results... "General Strike Suspension" After 16 Days

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] The Cargo Solidarity Headquarters of the Public Transport Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions decided to suspend the general strike on the 16th day of the strike, June 9.

The Cargo Solidarity stated, "As a result of conducting a vote among union members on whether to end the strike, the motion to end the general strike and return to the workplace was passed by a majority." They added, "The Cargo Solidarity will hold disbandment ceremonies at each regional headquarters and return to the workplace."

On the same day, starting from 9 a.m., the Cargo Solidarity began a general vote at 16 regional headquarters to minimize union members' damages and to urge the government to change its stance, which pressured unconditional return.

Earlier, the Cargo Solidarity Central Executive Committee was scheduled to discuss the level of the general strike at a meeting held on June 8, but the agenda was changed after the Democratic Party agreed to accept the government's and ruling party's proposal to extend the sunset clause of the Safe Freight Rate System by three years. After a meeting lasting over six hours, it was reported that there was consensus to prevent the system's sunset scheduled for the end of this year and to minimize union members' damages.
