The First Award in the History of Korean Automobiles
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 9th that the Ioniq 5 has won the 'Imported Car of the Year' award at the 'Japan Car of the Year 2022-2023,' hosted by the 'Japan Car of the Year Committee Executive Committee.'
This is the first time in Korean automotive history that a vehicle has been listed among the winners of the Japan Car of the Year.
The Japan Car of the Year was established in 1980 and annually selects the 'Best 10 Cars' through voting by judges on new cars released in Japan. Subsequently, through test drive evaluations and final voting, the Car of the Year in each category is chosen. The Ioniq 5, which won the Imported Car of the Year, triumphed over other Best 10 cars such as the BMW iX, Land Rover Range Rover, and Renault Arkana.
The Japan Car of the Year Committee commented on the Ioniq 5's award, stating, "Its innovative interior and exterior design, long single-charge driving range, dynamic driving performance, and various convenience and safety features received high praise from the judging panel." They added, "In particular, many judges appreciated the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel that allow changing the regenerative braking levels, enhancing the driving pleasure."
Jowon Sang, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Japan, said, "Since the launch of the Ioniq 5, it has received high evaluations amid strong interest from Japanese consumers." He added, "We will continue to contribute to the future of mobility in the Japanese market with sincerity and humility."
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor, which announced its re-entry into the Japanese passenger car market after 12 years in February this year, has conducted various customer experience events in major Japanese regions such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.
Since May, Hyundai has been selling the Ioniq 5 and Nexo online, and in July signed a contract to supply 50 Ioniq 5 vehicles to MK Taxi in Japan, marking the full-scale pursuit of the Japanese market.
