Sacheon-si Wins Grand Prize for Excellence at the 7th Korea Local Autonomy Policy Awards

Aerospace Hub City 'A New Beginning, Building a Happy City Sacheon' Receives High Praise

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Sacheon City, Gyeongnam Province, was selected as the grand prize winner at the ‘7th Korea Local Autonomy Policy Awards’.

Now in its 7th year, the ‘Korea Local Autonomy Policy Awards’ is the only domestic award in the policy field that discovers and honors excellent policies of local governments. It is hosted by Money Today and sponsored by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

They evaluated 226 local governments based on project goals and appropriateness, regional suitability and strategic value, the mayor’s determination to promote, ripple effects, and innovativeness, selecting award-winning institutions including Sacheon City.

In this evaluation, the city received high scores for key policies related to the aerospace industry and recovery of the people’s economy, promoted to realize the 8th term municipal administration indicator, ‘A New Start, Happy City Sacheon.’

Sacheon was designated as a candidate site for the satellite-specialized district in the space industry cluster to establish the Satellite Manufacturing Innovation Center, and the ‘2022 Sacheon Airshow,’ held for the first time in three years due to COVID-19, set a record with 400,000 visitors.

Furthermore, the location of the Korea Aerospace Administration, which will lead the country’s future economy and growth engine, was confirmed to be Sacheon.

On November 28, the government announced the ‘Future Space Economy Roadmap,’ which includes six major policy directions such as establishing the Aerospace Administration in Sacheon, Gyeongnam.

Also, through various meetings with citizens such as initial visits to towns, townships, and neighborhoods, and communication meetings with social organizations, the city actively reflected citizens’ opinions in policies, implementing citizen-consensus policies.

In particular, as a policy for ‘Happy City Sacheon,’ emergency disaster relief funds of 300,000 KRW per citizen were provided to revitalize the local economy.

To overcome the prolonged global economic downturn and recover the people’s economy, Sacheon signed an agreement with the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation and is preparing to issue Sacheon Love Gift Certificates worth 10 billion KRW in January next year.

The award ceremony for the ‘7th Korea Local Autonomy Policy Awards’ will be held at 3 p.m. on December 9 at the Central Park Hall on the 15th floor of the Kensington Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul.

Mayor Park Dong-sik said, “This award is the result created together by about 900 employees who have worked diligently with fairness and transparency and 120,000 Sacheon citizens,” adding, “We will create ‘Happy City Sacheon’ through relentless change and challenge.”
