Goseong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, announced the beginning of the public sewage treatment facility at the Jukdong Village Welfare Center residents' briefing session.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] The Goseong Public Sewage Treatment Facility in Gyeongnam has shed its past image as a nuisance facility and transformed into a space for resident communication and friendliness.
The odor from public sewage treatment facilities mainly occurs during the manure pretreatment facility's manure input stage, the sludge input in the composting facility, and the high-temperature drying composting stage. The Goseong Public Sewage Treatment Facility, being over 20 years old, caused significant inconvenience to nearby residents.
In response, Lee Sang-geun, the mayor of Goseong County, issued a special directive to ensure that residents of villages near the Goseong Public Sewage Treatment Facility would no longer suffer.
Subsequently, automatic shutters were installed at the entrance and exit of the manure pretreatment facility, and the previously partially open operation was changed to fully sealed operation.
Additionally, the old (former) composting facility was shut down, and only the (new) composting facility was operated. The facility, which had been running 24 hours a day, year-round, was restricted to operating only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with nighttime and holiday operations suspended to preemptively block odor sources.
Furthermore, the aging odor reduction facilities were thoroughly inspected and replaced or improved to enhance the efficiency of odor prevention facilities. At the boundary of the business site, partition walls were installed and landscaping was completed to create a waterfront-friendly environment.
The county announced the rebirth of the transformed public sewage treatment facility at a residents' briefing session held on the 8th at the Jukdong Village Welfare Center.
On that day, officials explained to residents the current status of the odor reduction facility improvement project at the Goseong Public Sewage Treatment Facility within the Water and Sewage Business Office, which has been underway since last November, and gathered residents' opinions to become a more resident-friendly space.
After the residents' briefing session, Goseong County plans to operate resident communication and tour programs quarterly at the Goseong Public Sewage Treatment Facility, accelerating efforts to improve the perception of sewage treatment facilities that were previously avoided as nuisance facilities.
Kim Jong-chun, head of the Water and Sewage Business Office, said, “Through regular communication with village residents, we will actively prepare improvement measures for residents' grievances. Thanks to our efforts to reduce odors so far, the odor has significantly decreased. We will be evaluated by the residents at the briefing session and will continue striving to achieve zero odor generation.”
