Choi Tae-won: "Korea, US, and Japan Must Unite Wisdom to Solve Global Issues" SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won delivers a welcome speech at the '2022 Trans-Pacific Dialogue' held near Washington D.C., USA, on the 5th (local time).

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] Chey Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, stated that "South Korea, the United States, and Japan must closely cooperate for peace and coexistence in Northeast Asia and beyond."


Chairman Chey attended the '2022 Trans-Pacific Dialogue,' held over three days starting on the 5th (local time) near Washington D.C., USA, hosted by the Choi Jong-hyun Academic Institute. He discussed international issues in Northeast Asia and the Pacific region with current and former high-ranking officials from Korea, the U.S., and Japan, as well as world-renowned scholars, think tanks, and business leaders.


As chairman of the academic institute, Chey emphasized in the 'Korea-Japan Special Session' that "Facing geopolitical challenges such as the Ukraine war and global supply chain issues, Korea and Japan must closely cooperate beyond merely improving bilateral relations to address common global challenges including climate change."

The special session was attended by Cho Tae-yong, South Korean Ambassador to the U.S., and Domita Koji, Japanese Ambassador to the U.S. Ambassador Cho stated, "Although Korea-Japan issues are difficult to resolve, dialogue will progress based on the trust and goodwill of the leaders of both countries," adding, "Improvement in bilateral relations will contribute to cooperation and coexistence in the broader Pan-Pacific region."


Ambassador Domita said, "Japan and Korea need to expand the scope of their cooperation and place their relationship in a larger, global context," and added, "We should have renewed confidence in our partnership and look forward to a positive future."


The event attracted significant attention with many U.S. political and governmental figures participating. On the first day, John Ikenberry, Princeton University Professor, John Hamre, President of CSIS, and Joseph Yun, Special Envoy for the Pacific Islands Forum, attended. On the second day, Kurt Campbell, White House National Security Council (NSC) Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs, Senator Jon Ossoff (Georgia), and former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel visited.


From Japan, Ichiro Fujisaki, Chairman of the Nakasone Peace Institute, Naoshi Hirose, former Director-General of Trade Policy at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Rui Matsukawa, member of the House of Councillors, and Keiro Kitagami, member of the House of Representatives, participated.


The academic institute explained, "Led by Korea’s private think tank, the Choi Jong-hyun Academic Institute, the significance lies in establishing a solid dialogue channel among Korea, the U.S., and Japan to explore cooperation methods extending beyond Northeast Asia to the broader Pan-Pacific region."


An SK Group official stated, "Chairman Chey has focused on private economic diplomacy, including his third visit to the U.S. this year," adding, "Going forward, we will continue private economic diplomacy by utilizing private diplomatic platforms operated in Pan-Pacific countries such as the Beijing Forum, Shanghai Forum, and Tokyo Forum."
