[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) held the ‘2050 Hope Tree’ lighting ceremony at 5:30 PM on the 6th at the circular plaza in front of Dongdaemun-gu Office to celebrate the upcoming Christmas and New Year.

The ‘2050 Hope Tree,’ measuring 7 meters in height and 3 meters in width, embodies the vision of the district’s new transformation. The lighting will continue every night until 11 PM from the day of the ceremony until January 27.

The lighting ceremony was graced by many attendees including Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, Lee Tae-in, Chairperson of Dongdaemun-gu Council, several council members, district executives, and the public officials’ union.

The trees in front of the district office were also prepared for winter with colorful coverings. Recently, the Korea Forest Service announced that previously used methods such as concealment sites, greening sacks, and straw wrapping had minimal effect in preventing pests and diseases. Therefore, fiber tree protectors with design effects were installed for winter protection.

The designed fiber tree protectors combine functional elements such as insulation and pest prevention with breathability due to their knit material. Using red and green colors that match the tree, the design captures the attention of residents passing by the district office.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, who participated in the lighting ceremony, said, “I hope the lit ‘2050 Hope Tree’ can bring small comfort and joy to the residents,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to create a bright and hopeful tomorrow together with the residents.”
