[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 6th that the safety and management tasks of ultralight aircraft (drone) usage businesses will be transferred from the Regional Aviation Administration to the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.
The Ministry explained that in order to strengthen safety and business management, the related tasks will be entrusted to the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, a specialized aviation safety management organization.
Until now, the Regional Aviation Administration has been responsible for the safety and business management of drone usage businesses, but there were limitations in inspection activities due to limited personnel.
The Korea Transportation Safety Authority will carry out business management tasks such as registration of drone usage businesses and business improvement orders, as well as safety management tasks including safety activities and safety improvement orders.
On-site inspections will be conducted jointly by the Regional Aviation Administration and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, while dispositions such as business registration cancellation, suspension, and fines will continue to be handled by the Regional Aviation Administration.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has established the legal basis for task delegation and the establishment and operation of an information system through amendments to the Aviation Business Act, and plans to build an information system for managing safety and business-related data by the end of this year.
