Setting Business Direction After Listening to Farmers' Opinions
'Jeoji Industry Promotion Public Hearing' to Be Held on the 13th
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province is launching efforts to breed and cultivate the new brown dairy cattle breed 'Jersey'.
According to the province, the 'Jersey' breed has higher milk fat and protein content than the 'Holstein' breed, making it suitable for producing dairy products such as butter and cheese.
Originating from the British Crown dependency Jersey Island, unlike the familiar spotted Holstein breed, the Jersey's basic coat color is brown.
It adapts well even to hot climates and poor pasture conditions, and its carbon emissions are known to be about 80% of those of Holsteins.
The Livestock Promotion Center of the province stated on the 6th, "Currently, using the infrastructure of the 'Dairy Support Center,' we are raising 5 candidate Jersey cows and 5 cows for embryo production."
The Promotion Center plans to secure 50 bulls and 200 cows through focused purchasing and breeding of the Jersey breed starting next year, and from March, distribute Jersey semen and embryos to farms.
The center will hold a 'Jersey Industry Development Public Hearing' on the 13th to promote the advantages of the Jersey breed, gather opinions from farmers wishing to switch to Jersey, and set the direction for the project.
At the hearing on the Jersey development plan (frozen semen and embryo production plan), they will hear about the Jersey breed propagation process and breeding status from Seoul Milk Cooperative, a company owning Jersey cattle.
In particular, they plan to collect opinions from farmers on actual breeding methods and project directions based on the experiences of farms establishing the Jersey breeding foundation.
Lee Kang-young, director of the Gyeonggi Livestock Promotion Center, said, "We plan to incorporate farmers' opinions for the development of the Jersey industry," adding, "We will play a role in revitalizing the new Jersey breed industry in line with Gyeonggi Province's status as the nation's top dairy producer (40%)."
