Suncheon City 20 Years as a Lifelong Learning City, Proclaims Vision for Future Educational Autonomy City

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) declared the '2023 Lifelong Learning City 20th Anniversary, Education Vision' at the Lifelong Education & Village Education Community Festival held on the 2nd.

The vision declaration ceremony was conducted as a performance where representatives from various groups such as students, youth, adults, and people with disabilities collectively built a symbolic structure.

Suncheon City presented the vision of "Onmaeul Learning Center that Enhances Citizens' Dignity, Future Education Autonomous City Suncheon," with three main tasks: first, strengthening value-reflective education including democratic citizenship, regional identity, and community restoration; second, resolving segmented education policies and promoting holistic educational cooperation among departments and civil society; third, creating nearby Onmaeul Learning Centers in citizens' living areas rather than being centered on government offices.

Following the declaration ceremony, an academic forum was held where Professor Yang Byung-chan of Kongju National University gave a keynote speech, and discussions on realizing future education through linked cooperation were conducted with presentations from local community activists, teachers, and public officials.

An official from Suncheon City's Lifelong Education Department said, "Starting with this education vision declaration, we hope that educational cooperation from a lifelong perspective will be realized so that learning experiences can accumulate based on the local community from children to adults."

Meanwhile, the Lifelong Education & Village Education Community Festival, held over three days from the 1st, featured a play performance from SongSan Elementary School students' project classes, citizen university, clubs, performances prepared by lifelong learners with disabilities, as well as experiences and exhibitions jointly hosted by lifelong education and village education communities, all of which were successfully operated.
