[Asia Economy (Siheung) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] A total of 33.6 billion KRW will be invested in the area around Geobukseom Island in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province to create a 'Marine Leisure Tourism Hub.'

On the 5th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 'Marine Leisure Tourism Hub' project, which will be jointly promoted with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Siheung City. A total of 33.6 billion KRW (16.8 billion KRW from the national government, 5.1 billion KRW from the provincial government, and 11.7 billion KRW from the city government) will be invested to build a marina port with mooring facilities for 90 vessels such as yachts and a three-story complex clubhouse by 2024 in the area around Geobukseom Island in Siheung.

Once completed, the number of marina facilities in the province will increase to four, including Jeongok Marina and Jebu Marina in Hwaseong, and Aram Marina in Gimpo.

The province especially expects Siheung City to emerge as a representative marine leisure tourism city in South Korea, as various marine leisure tourism clusters such as Siheung Wave Park, Aqua Pet Land, Marine Ecology Science Museum, and Scuba Diving Pool will be established centered around Geobukseom Island.

Siheung City is also promoting a marine leisure complex that includes Aqua Pet Land for research, distribution, and sales of ornamental fish, the Marine Ecology Science Museum, and an artificial surfing park nearby.

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon attended the groundbreaking ceremony and promised, "We will do our best to support Gyeonggi Province and Siheung City to develop as leaders in marine leisure tourism innovation and ensure successful outcomes."

He added, "Sihwa Lake will be reborn as a treasure trove of life and resources and will become a source of competitiveness encompassing not only Siheung but also Hwaseong and Ansan. I have no doubt that Siheung City, combining bio and everything else it has, will fulfill its role as the gateway to the West Sea and as a leader in Gyeonggi Province's development."
