[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] An exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the designation of the Hunminjeongeum Haerye edition as a national treasure will be held in Sejong.
Sejong City announced on the 5th that from the 12th to the 23rd of this month, it will hold the "Hunminjeongeum Haerye Edition and Uirye Edition (National Treasure No. 70) Gold Powder Sutra Copying Exhibition" in the first-floor lobby of City Hall.
The Hunminjeongeum Haerye edition contains the principles of the creation of Hunminjeongeum, its writing system, and usage methods. The exhibition is organized to widely promote the value and excellence of Hangeul on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Hunminjeongeum Haerye edition's designation as a national treasure.
Published in 1446 along with the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum, the Hunminjeongeum Haerye edition consists of the "Yeui (Examples and Meanings)" section, in which King Sejong himself wrote about the purpose of creating Hunminjeongeum and its phonetic values and usage, and the "Haerye (Explanations)" section, where Jiphyeonjeon scholars such as Jeong In-ji, Shin Suk-ju, Seong Sam-mun, Choi Hang, and Park Paeng-nyeon explained the principles of creation and usage methods.
At the exhibition, two gold powder sutra copying (Geumpun Sageong) works, handwritten with gold powder based on the Haerye and Uirye editions, will be unveiled.
Visitors will also be able to learn about various stories related to Hangeul, including the significance and process of compiling the Haerye edition and King Sejong's Hangeul dissemination policies.
The Hunminjeongeum Haerye edition is also designated as a UNESCO Memory of the World, making it difficult for the general public to access.
However, through this exhibition, the city expects visitors to have an opportunity to understand the history of Hangeul easily and interestingly.
A city official said, "As Sejong City proclaims itself as the capital of Hangeul culture, we will continue to strive to provide various attractions and enjoyable experiences related to Hangeul so that Sejong can be reborn as a new cultural city representing the Republic of Korea."
