The South Korean national football team won 2-1 against Portugal in the final Group H match of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, held on the morning of the 3rd (Korean time) at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.
After drawing 0-0 with Uruguay in the first match and losing 2-3 to Ghana, South Korea finished with 1 win, 1 draw, and 1 loss (4 points, 4 goals scored, 4 goals conceded), securing second place in Group H behind Portugal (2 wins, 1 loss) and advancing to the Round of 16, where the top two teams from each group compete.
Coach Bento was unable to take the field that day after receiving a red card for protesting to the referee following the second match against Ghana.
Stepping in for Bento and leading the comeback victory, head coach Costa could not hide his excitement and emotional voice during a post-match broadcast interview.
He repeatedly said, "All the players and coaching staff deserve to share this victory together."
With this win, South Korea advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in 12 years since the 2010 South Africa tournament.
Including the historic 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, where they reached the semifinals?their best ever performance?this marks the third time South Korea has advanced past the group stage in the World Cup finals.
