[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Lee Gisoon, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, will visit the Seoul Migrant Women Didim Center in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of the 2nd to hear opinions from the field supporting the independence of migrant women victims of violence in commemoration of the Week for the Eradication of Violence Against Women (November 25 to December 1).
The Seoul Migrant Women Didim Center is a specialized facility for migrant women that provides integrated services such as counseling for the psychological stability of migrant women victims of violence and their accompanying children, medical and legal support, housing, and vocational training for self-sufficiency.
Over the past 10 years, it has operated various educational programs including Korean language and computer education, social adaptation, and employment and entrepreneurship programs, successfully helping all graduates find employment in professional occupations such as bank clerks, tailors, and bakers, serving as a stepping stone for the self-reliance of migrant women.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family operates nine specialized counseling centers and 33 protection facilities nationwide for migrant women who have difficulty in married life due to domestic violence and other issues. Migrant women victims of violence can receive protection in these facilities for up to two years. Upon discharge, they are provided with support funds of 5 million won necessary for their independence.
Vice Minister Lee Gisoon said, "I am grateful to the workers who do their best to support victims of violence who are in urgent need of help despite difficult circumstances, and I hope that the migrant women currently residing will overcome their wounds and stand strong as soon as possible." She added, "We will continue to promote support for victims so that migrant women do not suffer from domestic violence and other hardships."
