Measure Winter Wind Chill Only When Wind Speed Is 1.3 m/s or Higher
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] “Especially, with the wind blowing somewhat strongly, the wind chill temperature will be around -15 degrees, making it feel very cold...”
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's weather explanation data on the 1st, the entire country will continue to experience very cold conditions until the 2nd. A cold wave advisory has been issued nationwide due to cold air moving southward from the northwest. This day marks the beginning of December, signaling the start of winter.
The wind chill temperature dropping to -15 degrees is a figure reminiscent of midwinter. An interesting point is the difference between the actual temperature and the wind chill temperature.
As of 1:03 PM on the 1st, the temperature in Seoul is -3 degrees Celsius. However, the wind chill temperature is -7 degrees Celsius. This means the wind chill temperature is about 4 degrees lower than the actual temperature.
During winter, the wind chill temperature provides the daily minimum perceived temperature. It is not always measured; whether it is calculated depends on the reference temperature and wind speed.
The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, “It is calculated only when the temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius and the wind speed is 1.3 m/s or higher.”
The formula used by the Korea Meteorological Administration to calculate wind chill temperature is as follows.
13.12 + 0.6215T - 11.37 V^0.16 + 0.3965 V^0.16T
T: Temperature (°C), V: Wind speed (km/h)
For the general public to accurately calculate the wind chill temperature, they must endure the hassle of applying this complex formula. To understand wind chill temperature more easily, focus on its relationship with wind speed. Simply put, for every 1 m/s increase in wind speed, the wind chill temperature drops by about 2 degrees Celsius.
The reason wind chill temperature is important is that winter weather is influenced more by the wind chill temperature than the actual temperature.
The Korea Meteorological Administration explained, “Wind chill temperature quantitatively represents the heat or cold felt by humans and is provided separately for summer (May to September) and winter (October to April of the following year).”
