Chonnam National University Hospital Receives 'Grade 1' in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery and Hemodialysis Appropriateness Evaluation

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam National University Hospital (Director Ahn Young-geun) has once again proven that it is a medical institution providing the best medical services.

Jeonnam National University Hospital announced on the 30th that it received a Grade 1 rating in both the '8th Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Appropriateness Evaluation' and the '7th Hemodialysis Appropriateness Evaluation.'

This marks the 7th consecutive Grade 1 rating in the Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Appropriateness Evaluation and the 5th consecutive Grade 1 rating in the Hemodialysis Appropriateness Evaluation.

The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service conducted the appropriateness evaluation targeting 88 advanced general hospitals and general hospitals nationwide that performed coronary artery bypass graft surgery for ischemic heart disease from October 2020 to September 2021.

As a result, Jeonnam National University Hospital achieved a comprehensive score of 99.43 points, far exceeding the overall average (94.17 points) and the average for advanced general hospitals (95.07 points), earning the highest Grade 1 rating.

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery is a procedure that creates a new blood vessel bypassing the blocked coronary artery using arteries or veins from other parts of the body for patients with ischemic heart diseases such as acute myocardial infarction and angina.

The main evaluation indicators include ▲number of coronary artery bypass graft surgeries ▲rate of coronary artery bypass graft using internal thoracic artery ▲aspirin prescription rate at discharge ▲reoperation rate due to postoperative bleeding and hematoma ▲30-day postoperative mortality rate ▲30-day readmission rate after discharge ▲length of hospital stay after surgery.

In this evaluation, Jeonnam National University Hospital received high scores across all categories, notably recording an overwhelmingly high 159 cases of coronary artery surgeries compared to the overall average and the average for the same hospital category. It also scored highly in length of hospital stay after surgery and 30-day postoperative mortality rate, securing the Grade 1 rating for the 7th consecutive time.

Furthermore, Jeonnam National University Hospital received a Grade 1 rating in the evaluation of 12 indicators including personnel, equipment, and treatment processes for adult patients who underwent hemodialysis at least twice a week from October 2020 to March 2021.

Hemodialysis artificially purifies the blood of patients whose kidney function has declined, filtering out waste products from the blood.

Since hemodialysis patients have high mortality rates due to stroke, heart disease, and other causes, and face quality of life issues during treatment, it is important for them to receive safe and appropriate care from dialysis specialists. Therefore, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service evaluates whether medical institutions have adequate personnel, facilities, and equipment to provide treatment.

Jeonnam National University Hospital achieved a perfect score of 100 points in items such as ▲proportion of doctors specializing in hemodialysis ▲compliance with the frequency of hemodialysis adequacy tests ▲monitoring compliance for arteriovenous fistula stenosis, earning a comprehensive score of 99 points and securing the Grade 1 rating for the 5th consecutive time, along with receiving additional incentives.

Director Ahn Young-geun stated, "We provide the best medical services in managing acute cardiovascular diseases and chronic conditions such as hemodialysis. We will continue to do our best as a hospital known for excellent heart surgeries and as a hospital that offers a safe system for dialysis patients."
