[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Dongwoo Lee] The government has designated and will support the USB-C power and data connection port for small electronic devices such as mobile phones and tablet PCs as the national standard.
The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 30th that it established three national standards integrating connection ports used in small electronic devices into USB-C on the previous day (29th), and published a USB-C port application guideline for companies to utilize.
The established national standards are based on three International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards: ▲ USB-C cable and connector shape specification (KSCIEC62680-1-3) ▲ USB power delivery method specification (KSCIEC62680-1-2) ▲ Interoperability and communication method specification for external power supply (KSCIEC63002).
On the same day, the National Institute of Technology and Standards held a 'USB-C Standard Corporate Briefing' at the aT Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul, attended by about 50 representatives from companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and consumer organizations, introducing the national standards and guidelines. The guidelines include functional evaluation requirements such as durability and withstand voltage tests for USB-C cables and connectors, as well as electrical safety requirements for major product groups.
At the briefing, reflecting trends in international standards to expand the range of power supply capacity, a plan to expand the power supply capacity in the national standards from the current 100W to a maximum of 240W was also discussed. The National Institute of Technology and Standards held a meeting with manufacturers, consumer organizations, and other attendees along with the briefing, and companies agreed to expand the adoption of USB-C ports.
Lee Sang-hoon, Director of the National Institute of Technology and Standards, said, "By utilizing the standards, domestic companies will secure industrial competitiveness, and consumers will be supported to easily select and use products applying USB-C ports."
