[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Lotte Super is taking the lead to support Jeju tangerine farms.
Lotte Super announced that to promote consumption, it will purchase about 100 tons of fresh Jeju tangerines and sell 30,000 boxes of 'Jeju Fresh Early Tangerines (3.5kg)' at around 7,900 won when paid with event cards from the 30th to December 6th.
The reason Lotte Super planned the Jeju tangerine consumption promotion event is due to poor export conditions. Many farms are struggling with exports due to the prolonged war in Russia, which accounts for 80% of Jeju tangerine exports. Russia has allowed imports of Chinese tangerines starting this year, making future prospects bleak. According to the Jeju Provincial Government's Tangerine Promotion Division, this year's Jeju tangerine exports to Russia are expected to be half of last year's volume.
This event was planned through prior consultation six months ago between Lotte Super and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Jeju Agricultural Corporation to support sales channels for Jeju tangerine farms and is conducted in the form of joint investment. Lotte Super, Jeju Agricultural Corporation, and local agricultural cooperatives each bear one-third of the discount amount. Lotte Super will select and sell tangerines sized 49?66mm in diameter with a Brix level of 10 or higher during this event.
Meanwhile, local MDs from Lotte Super and Lotte Mart are traveling nationwide to help farms with stockpiled produce due to poor export conditions secure sales channels. Lotte Mart is helping paprika farms burdened with accumulated export volumes due to the historic low yen, while also easing consumer burdens caused by high prices by purchasing 30 tons of B+ grade paprika, which has the same taste and nutrition but less attractive appearance, and selling it under the name 'Win-Win Paprika.'
