[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] An underground road will be constructed on Local Road No. 23 and National Road No. 43 around 'Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City,' a new growth hub city in the southern metropolitan area, and an interchange (IC) connected to the Gyeongbu Line underground expressway will be installed, significantly expanding transportation infrastructure.

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 29th that the 'Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City Urban Development Project' metropolitan transportation improvement plan, which includes these details, was finalized on the 28th after review by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Metropolitan Area Wide-Area Transportation Committee.

Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City is a project jointly implemented by Gyeonggi Province, Yongin City, Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH), and Yongin Urban Corporation to create a new growth hub city in the southern metropolitan area. It will be developed over approximately 2,757,000㎡ (about 830,000 pyeong) in the Bojeong, Mabuk, and Singal-dong areas of Giheung-gu, Yongin City, with construction starting in the second half of next year.

The finalized metropolitan transportation improvement plan was established to solve transportation issues arising from the development of large-scale housing sites (areas of 500,000㎡ or more or a population of 10,000 or more). A total project cost of 1.0784 trillion KRW will be invested and implemented through 11 measures.

First, to disperse traffic demand in the Yongin area’s habitual congestion sections, new underground roads will be constructed on Local Road No. 23 (from the Driver’s License Test Center to Samsung Renault Automobile Intersection) and National Road No. 43 (from Suji District Office Intersection to Pungdeokcheon Intersection). Additionally, an underground road on Sinsu-ro (Sammakgok to GC Green Cross) will be opened for vehicles passing through Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City.

Furthermore, to improve accessibility to areas surrounding Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City, connecting roads will be built between the project site and Yonggu-daero, and between the project site and Suji. Considering the increased traffic volume around GTX Yongin Station, the existing Guseong 1 Bridge and Guseong 2 Bridge will also be expanded.

In particular, the installation of an interchange on the Gyeongbu Line underground expressway is expected to alleviate residents’ inconvenience when traveling from the Yongin area to surrounding areas such as Seongnam and Suwon via the Gyeongbu Expressway. Detailed matters such as the location and type of the interchange will be reviewed by Korea Expressway Corporation, the implementing agency of the Gyeongbu Line underground expressway.

Also, to promote public transportation and improve convenience for railway users, the GTX Yongin Station transfer facility will be constructed in connection with a complex transfer center equipped with commercial and business support facilities in the future.

Hong Ji-seon, Director of the Urban Housing Office of Gyeonggi Province, said, "Yongin City is an area with severe traffic congestion due to commuting vehicles to and from Seoul and other metropolitan areas." He added, "With the finalization of this metropolitan transportation improvement plan, it is expected that commuting times in the metropolitan area will be shortened, habitual congestion sections will be alleviated, and regional development and residents’ mobility convenience will be enhanced."
