Detective in Past Life? 60s Citizen Helps Capture 4 Voice Phishing Criminals

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Gwangju Police Agency announced on the 28th that it awarded compensation and commendation certificates to a citizen who contributed to the arrest of a cash collector involved in telephone financial fraud (voice phishing) through a 112 report.

A (female in her 60s) became suspicious of B, who was repeatedly transferring cash in installments at an ATM in Suwan-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 23rd, and reported the suspected voice phishing to the police.

The police responded to the report and arrived at the scene, arresting B, who was attempting to defraud the victim of 17 million won and send it to the organization. Currently, only a portion of the stolen money has been recovered.

A played a decisive role in arresting four cash collectors through a total of four reports this year, including this case.

A said, "I usually have a strong interest in preventing voice phishing crimes, so I naturally keep an eye on my surroundings and watch people who behave suspiciously."

A police official urged, "Since it is difficult to recover the stolen money due to overseas remittances even if the perpetrators of voice phishing crimes are caught, active participation of citizens in prevention activities is necessary."
