[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] On the 28th, President Yoon Suk-yeol will announce the 'Future Space Economy Roadmap,' which includes six major policy directions to realize a space economy powerhouse. Preparations for the launch of the Korea Aerospace Agency, included in the Presidential Transition Committee's national agenda and aimed to open next year, will also be intensified.
Lee Jae-myung, Deputy Spokesperson of the Presidential Office, stated at a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the 27th, "President Yoon Suk-yeol will announce the 'Future Space Economy Roadmap,' including six major policy directions to realize a space economy powerhouse tomorrow." The roadmap also includes plans to establish the Korea Aerospace Agency, Korea's version of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).
The deputy spokesperson explained, "Within this year, we plan to start consultations with relevant ministries after the legislative notice for the special law," adding, "We will submit the special law to the National Assembly in the first quarter of next year, and through its approval in the second quarter, the revision of subordinate statutes, and the commencement of international joint research with NASA and others, we will strive to open the Korea Aerospace Agency within next year."
He further explained, "Although the space economy may seem like a distant future story, during the development process of the Nuri rocket, over 300 companies ranging from large to small enterprises pioneered the new space economy sector and generated profits," adding, "We will lay the foundation to make it a future growth engine for the Republic of Korea."
To this end, a task force will soon be launched by presidential decree to carry out roles such as enacting the special law, designing the organization, securing personnel and budget, and preparing office facilities.
The government plans to place the Korea Aerospace Agency under the Ministry of Science and ICT and organize it with term-based public officials focused on experts and programs. Additionally, to ensure rapid execution of space development programs, the head of the Korea Aerospace Agency, who will hold a vice-ministerial rank, will be granted autonomy over organizational formation and dissolution, salary determination, and other matters.
