Even with the heater on, ventilate frequently
The number of traffic accident fatalities on highways surged in November, with most accidents caused by drowsiness or inattention.
According to Korea Expressway Corporation on the 27th, 19 fatal traffic accidents occurred this month, of which 17 were caused by drowsiness or inattention.
During winter, when external temperatures drop, the body’s adjustment to weather changes lowers sleep quality, making drivers more prone to fatigue. Additionally, using the heater for extended periods with windows closed increases the concentration of carbon dioxide inside the vehicle, which induces drowsiness more easily than usual.
Especially on highways where speeds exceed 100 km/h, even 4 seconds of dozing off is equivalent to driving about 100 meters unconsciously, making it difficult to respond in emergencies. As a result, the fatality rate is twice as high compared to general accidents.
To prevent drowsy driving, it is advisable to get sufficient rest the day before and take light stretching breaks to loosen stiff neck or back muscles at rest areas or drowsiness shelters when driving for more than two hours.
Also, keep the vehicle interior temperature cool and, if using the heater, ventilate the cabin by opening windows every 1 to 2 hours. Consuming caffeine found in coffee or chocolate stimulates the central nervous system and helps prevent drowsiness.
If an accident occurs, it is crucial to evacuate to a safe place as quickly as possible to prevent secondary accidents. Secondary accidents happen when following vehicles collide with stopped vehicles due to accidents or breakdowns, and their fatality rate is about seven times higher than general accidents.
If the vehicle is stopped on the main lane or shoulder, turn on the hazard lights and open the trunk to alert following vehicles, then quickly evacuate outside the guardrail or to another safe area. When assisting other vehicles involved in an accident, always ensure your own safety first.
Korea Expressway Corporation operates an 'Emergency Towing Service' to prevent secondary accidents. This service tows broken-down vehicles free of charge to the nearest tollgate, rest area, or drowsiness shelter. You can request this service by contacting the Korea Expressway Corporation call center.
