[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on the 23rd that it, along with the Construction Industry Social Contribution Foundation and Plan Korea, delivered disaster safety helmets to elementary schools in the Pohang area and conducted disaster safety evacuation education and evacuation drills.

These organizations sequentially delivered approximately 3,800 disaster safety helmets to eight schools in the Pohang area (Hangdo Elementary, Daebo Elementary, Jangseong Elementary, Jangryang Elementary, Gokgang Elementary, Haemaji Elementary, Songdo Elementary, and Daeheung Elementary) between October and November this year.

This project is a social contribution initiative aimed at providing safety helmets to protect children's heads during disasters such as earthquakes and offering practical help for child safety through evacuation drills. Starting in 2019 in the Gyeongju area, then Busan in 2021, and Pohang this year, over the past three years, more than 11,000 helmets have been delivered to a total of 22 elementary schools in major earthquake-prone areas.

The disaster safety helmets feature a four-layer structure that can be folded to minimize volume, and are equipped with RFID tags to assist rescue activities in emergencies. Reflective material is attached to the top to make the helmets highly visible in urgent situations, and the position of the adjustable chin strap and whistle, necessary for disaster situations, has been modified.

The safety education was conducted in an experiential format, moving away from theory-centered lessons, including wearing helmets, learning earthquake alert songs, and evacuation drills using rescue handkerchiefs. Each school plans to autonomously conduct individual evacuation drills semiannually in the future.

A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official stated, "Through this helmet distribution and disaster evacuation training, we expect students to recognize the urgency of earthquake damage and effectively prevent harm in emergency situations." The official added, "We will continue to discover and carry out social contribution activities that contribute to the environment and safety."
