[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] France, aiming for a second consecutive World Cup title, secured a come-from-behind victory against Australia.

On the 23rd (Korean time), France defeated Australia 4-1 in the first match of Group D at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, held at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar. Olivier Giroud (AC Milan), who scored two goals alone, and Kylian Mbapp? (Paris Saint-Germain), who contributed one goal and one assist, led the team’s performance.

The opening goal belonged to Australia. In the 9th minute of the first half, Goodwin’s shot from close range, following Leckie’s low cross, found the back of the net.

However, in the 27th minute of the first half, Adrien Rabiot (Juventus) scored a header, and five minutes later, Giroud’s non-stop right-footed shot, following Rabiot’s cutback, hit the net. The third goal was created by Mbapp?. In the 23rd minute of the second half, Demb?l? delivered a cross from the right, which Mbapp? finished with a header to add another goal. Three minutes later, Giroud sealed the match with a header from Mbapp?’s cross, completing his multi-goal performance.

France rose to first place in Group D, while Australia ranked last in fourth place, following Tunisia and Denmark, who drew in an earlier match in the same group.

France, pursuing back-to-back titles since winning the 2018 Russia tournament, made a smooth start. So far, only Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958, 1962) have achieved consecutive World Cup victories.
