[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] The police have launched an investigation into an online post threatening to kill an MBC reporter who protested against President Yoon Suk-yeol and had an argument with a presidential secretary.
On the 22nd, the Mapo Police Station in Seoul announced that they are currently protecting the reporter's safety in connection with the post threatening to kill the MBC reporter.
On an online community the previous morning, a post titled "I will take the lead and kill the MBC reporter" was uploaded. The author attached a captured photo of the MBC reporter exchanging heated words with Lee Ki-jung, the Presidential Secretariat's Public Relations Planning Secretary, and wrote, "I will go to MBC immediately and kill him." This post has since been deleted.
The Busan Police Agency is reportedly tracking the internet protocol (IP) address of the author who posted the threat to kill the MBC reporter.
The Mapo Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the location of MBC headquarters, provided the reporter with a smartwatch, registered information in the personal protection 112 system, and patrolled around the MBC building.
Earlier, on the 18th, during a door-stopping Q&A on the way to the presidential office, President Yoon explained the reason for excluding MBC reporters from boarding the presidential aircraft, stating that MBC "displayed malicious behavior."
In response, the threatened reporter questioned President Yoon, asking, "What exactly did MBC do maliciously?" Even after President Yoon left, a heated exchange occurred between the reporter and the secretary.
