Contributing to Building Community Consensus and Strengthening Capacity in the Field of Air Pollution
The regular general meeting of the Air Pollution Countermeasures Committee of Namhae-gun, Gyeongnam was held at the auditorium of the Seomyeon Comprehensive Welfare Center.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Song Jong-gu] The regular general meeting of the Air Pollution Countermeasures Committee of Namhae-gun, Gyeongnam was held on the afternoon of the 18th at the Seomyeon Comprehensive Welfare Center Auditorium.
About 70 people attended the meeting, including County Governor Jang Chung-nam, Provincial Assemblyman Ryu Kyung-wan, County Assemblymen Yeo Dong-chan and Ha Bok-man, Namhae Environmental Center Director Jo Se-yoon, Climate Crisis Citizens' Action Representative Kim Kwang-seok, Green Leader Council Chairman Jeong Jun-soon, and local residents.
The regular general meeting proceeded in the order of the progress report by Secretary-General Kwak Sang-rae, amendment of the articles of association, financial settlement report, and lecture by invited speakers.
In particular, the passionate lectures by invited environmental experts to build consensus and strengthen capabilities in the field of air pollution received enthusiastic responses and empathy from the attendees.
Through a Q&A session with Professor Emeritus Baek Do-myung of Seoul National University, Dr. Kim Min-jung, a sociologist at Sungkonghoe University, and Professor Kim Seon-tae of the Department of Environmental Engineering at Daejeon University, a consensus was formed regarding pollution sources and their impacts that were previously unknown.
Chairman Park Young-chul said, “What we are doing now is by no means a matter for myself alone, but a very important action that affects our future generations,” and added, “Let us all unite our efforts until we complete the long journey to enact the ‘Act on Support for Areas Surrounding Industrial Complexes’ by identifying health rights recovery from air pollution and the numerous damages our region is experiencing.”
Governor Jang said, “I give great applause to your sense of mission in focusing on air environment conservation activities for the safe and pleasant daily lives of the residents,” and added, “I hope that the Air Pollution Countermeasures Committee will continue to raise awareness and attention to the local air pollution status and contribute more to cooperation and linked development with local environmental organizations.”
Since its establishment in February 2020, the Namhae-gun Air Pollution Countermeasures Committee has been conducting various activities such as leasing air pollution measuring devices, investigation and analysis result disclosure, resident education, exchanges with environmental organizations in the Gwangyang Bay area, attendance at National Assembly public hearings and legislative forums. It currently consists of branches in Namhae-eup, Seomyeon, Nam-myeon, Gohyeon-myeon, and Seolcheon-myeon, with about 150 members.
