Naver Shares Technology Solutions with Media Outlets... "Evolution of Subscription Platforms"

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Choi] Naver is set to provide technical solution support for media platform operations to news organizations.

On the 17th, Naver unveiled its news service evolved into a subscription-centered platform and mutually beneficial technical solutions at the 'Media Connect Day.'

They have accumulated various technologies necessary for media platforms, including traffic distribution, natural language processing, and content automation technologies, and plan to support individual technology units and data to enable news organizations to conduct new experiments.

First, Naver will allow news organizations to utilize curation content generated by the curation tool Smart Content Studio (SCS) on their own sites, and sequentially provide from the first quarter of next year ▲‘Curation Assistance,’ an automated curation technology that helps produce news in various ways ▲‘Transform Application Programming Interface (API),’ which can convert foreign languages, Chinese characters, etc., into Hangul or apply voice transformation technology ▲malicious comment detection technology ‘Clean Bot,’ among others.

Additionally, content-based technologies will be disclosed to enable various experiments such as news summarization and sentiment analysis. A continuous monitoring system that can send alerts upon fault detection and analytical reports supporting cross-analysis of statistical data will also be provided.

At the Media Connect Day, the current status of Naver News, which has transformed into a subscription-centered platform since the launch of the ‘News Organization Editing’ service, was also revealed.

About five years after launching the ‘News Organization Editing’ service, Naver News’ subscription service has 26.44 million users, with an average of seven subscribed news organizations per person. Approximately 70% of media outlets have over one million subscribers. As of October, the number of subscriptions to reporters’ homepages has increased by an average of 300,000 per month, surpassing 8 million in May this year, and is expected to exceed 10 million by the end of the year. Since July, articles curated directly by reporters on individual reporter homepages have been served as ‘Reporter Recommendation Cards’ on MY News, with 100,000 users consuming interesting news daily through this service.

Naver plans to expand channels so that users can easily access high-quality, trustworthy articles from news organizations. Since July last year, themed planning articles have been published in the ‘In-depth Planning’ section, with about 230,000 diverse articles introduced as of October. Naver News is also preparing to open a news organization edition and individual news organization homepage weekly corners.

Yoo Bong-seok, Head of Naver Service Operations, said, “We will actively support segmented forms of technology and data tailored to partners’ operational methods and staffing situations and grow together with news organizations,” adding, “We will further enhance services so that more users can access quality articles and news organizations can actively communicate with users in line with rapidly changing news consumption trends.”
