[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Monk Jukyung has been elected as the Chairman of the Central Council of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.


The Central Council of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism held the 18th inaugural council meeting on the 9th and unanimously elected Monk Jukyung as the chairman for the first half of the term.


Monk Jukyung received his precepts (Sami precepts) in 1986 under the guidance of Monk Seoljeong. He has served as Director of Planning at the General Affairs Office, President of the Buddhist Newspaper, Auditor of Dongguk University, a member of the Central Council from the 14th to 17th terms, and Vice Chairman of the 17th Central Council. He is currently the Deputy Head Monk of Sudeoksa Temple, the main temple of the 7th district.


Additionally, Monk Mugwan was elected as Senior Vice Chairman, and Monk Beopwon as Junior Vice Chairman. Monk Ubong, who previously served as the Secretary General of the 17th Central Council, was re-elected as Secretary General.


Monk Mugwan, who received his precepts (Sami precepts) in 1987, is currently the Head Monk of Jangan Temple in Busan. Monk Beopwon, who received his precepts (Sami precepts) in 1996, currently serves as the Head Monk of Jeongto Temple and Deputy Head of the Military Special District. Monk Ubong, who received his precepts (Sami precepts) in 1994, is currently the Head Monk of Hwache Temple.


Monk Hyeil was elected as the 9th Director of the Education Institute. Monk Hyeil received his precepts (Sami precepts) in 1986 under the guidance of Monk Dogyeon. He has served as a member of the Central Council in the 14th, 15th, and 17th terms, Director of Planning at the General Affairs Office, Head of the Cultural Department, Chief of the Special Report Team, Secretary General of the Central Council, and Secretary General of Beautiful Together. He is currently the Head Monk of Bongguksa Temple in Seongnam.
