[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] The police have arrested and are investigating a North Korean Juche ideology researcher on charges of possessing pro-North Korean materials.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Security Investigation Unit announced on the 9th that they have arrested Dr. Jeong Dae-il of the Unification Era Research Institute on charges of violating the National Security Act and are currently investigating him.
It is known that Dr. Jeong was issued an arrest warrant by the court after failing to appear for questioning three times as a witness. The police arrested Dr. Jeong at his residence in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province on the same day.
Prior to this, in July, the police conducted a search and seizure at Dr. Jeong's residence on the same charges.
According to the police, Dr. Jeong is suspected of possessing pro-North Korean materials such as the memoirs of North Korean leader Kim Il-sung, "With the Century." In 2011, the Supreme Court ruled that the memoirs fall under the category of pro-North Korean materials.
A police official stated, "We arrested (Dr. Jeong) this morning and are currently investigating him," adding, "Whether to detain him will be decided based on the investigation results."
