[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] It has been revealed that high schools in Daegu city have closed 14 dormitories after three years.
The Daegu City Council, which is conducting an administrative audit of the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education, announced on the 9th, "In 2019, 44 high schools in Daegu operated dormitories, but by 2022, the number decreased to 30, showing that 14 high schools stopped operating dormitories within three years."
Among the 30 high schools currently operating dormitories, students are reluctant to use them; at High School A, only 4 students applied for a capacity of 120, and at High School B, 6 students reside in a dormitory with a capacity of 73.
Kim Won-kyu (People Power Party, Dalseong-gun), a member of the Daegu City Council, said, "From 2012 to 2014, with the introduction of the autonomous public high school system, dormitories were built at 12 high schools to reduce education expenses and foster a study atmosphere, but most dormitories closed within less than a decade."
Councilman Kim urged, "The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education should investigate the overall status of dormitory operations and establish recycling measures."
In response, the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education stated, "Among the 14 closed high school dormitories, 7 public and 2 private dormitories have already been repurposed as club rooms and self-directed study rooms. Additionally, there are plans to repurpose 3 dormitories closing next year for other uses."
