The Gyeongbuk Election Commission stated that Mr. A, the elected mayor, was accused of underreporting the combined assets of himself and his spouse by about 3.4 billion won during candidate registration in mid-May, and Mr. B, the elected county governor, was accused of underreporting his total assets by about 4.4 billion won, leading to their referral for prosecution.
Additionally, Mr. C, the elected city council member, omitted 24 million won in deposits and underreported debts by 450 million won among his assets, and Mr. D, the elected county council member, omitted debts of 200 million won from his reported assets to the commission, resulting in the dissemination of false asset information to the electorate through election bulletins and the Central Election Commission website.
Article 250 (False Statement Publication Crime) Paragraph 1 of the Public Official Election Act stipulates that "Any person who, for the purpose of being elected or causing another to be elected, publishes or causes to be published false facts favorable to a candidate regarding the candidate, the candidate's spouse, direct ascendants or descendants, or siblings' birthplace, family relations, status, occupation, career, assets, conduct, affiliated organizations, or support from specific individuals or organizations through speeches, broadcasts, newspapers, communications, magazines, posters, campaign documents, or other methods, or who possesses campaign documents containing false facts for the purpose of distribution, shall be punished by imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to 30 million won."
